Happy Spring everybody! The lyrics has no particular meaning for me but I wanted to share this song “You are my spring” for our enjoyment of the current spring season here where I live and other parts of the world that is currently experiencing spring time.

Recently I’m listening to many Korean songs or, rather, Korean albums. I’m not sure sure if this thread is appropriate, but I thought that maybe I can share my impressions here. So I’ll start with this album:

I just can say from the start that up to date this is my favorite album of all Korean albums I’ve listened.

I discovered Ali… I think one year ago or so and I immediately fell in love with her vocal and her overall style. Among the Korean female singers, she is definitely among the ones who have really strong vocal, in fact her vocal is just outstanding and it’s a great contrast to many other pop-singers.
Many singers with vocals like this just mostly do ballads and ballads are hit or miss for me, I love some and I can’t stand some others, but often they are just too boring to listen. So with this album, I also expected to listen mostly ballads and I was prepared for this, BUT, and that’s a big but, she actually presents a great variety of styles in this album. And that’s really great, because it just makes it look like every song is special and has its own place.

Of course she also has it’s own unique style which makes it all coherent, but it’s just so great that you are not listening to the same thing during this album and each song is really good, I like them all and I actually listen to them all more or less equally.

The song I listen the most is “뱀파이어” actually, not sure why… It is the fastest song on the album and it reminds me of “Lie Lie Lie” by Serj Tankian for some reason, maybe that’s why :) But I can’t say it’s my favorite of all. I really love all the songs there.

The packing of the album is good too, as it usually is with Korean albums. This one, however, is rather modest comparing with albums from some others singers of groups, but I enjoyed it a lot. It basically has some photos of ALi, all really good and also lyrics to all the songs. That’s more than enough.

So if you like singers with great vocals and when the vocal is the most important part of the song, then I highly recommend this album. It presents songs of different styles and you surely will like at least some of them. So check it out :)

thanks for sharing this, Daniel. I’ve heard about Ali and she is a good singer. I had no chance to listen her album before. I think your comment will be helpful for me to look for her songs. :D

Many of you probably know about the Korean pop band f(x). I really loved their album called “Nu Abo”, especially the title song of the same name, because it sounds very different from typical pop songs, yet it is a pop song. The artistic style of that album was also superb, but since that time not much was heard about them.

    Then this came out:

Wow, this is almost as good as “Nu Abo”. So I just had to check the whole album:

So, well… It is good, but sadly it is mostly just an average pop album, while their first one was really remarkable as a whole. Here I really doubt I will listen to it as a whole many times, even though some of those songs have some remarkable bits, but overall, none of them really stands out, except the “Electric shock”.

Another thing that really stands out in this album, is the packaging. The included book with photos is just gorgeous and the whole thing is just a pleasure to my artistic feelings. It’s sad, that the musical contend isn’t really up to the artistic packaging it comes with.

Which is a shame, because I really love this band and I wish the best for them.

For one thing, I really hope they will release a full length album instead of another mini-album and the songs will be also as good as in “Nu Abo”.

So, overall, if you like f(x), the album is definitely worth buying if only for a title track and the artistic cover and book inside.

Hey Daniel, you are pretty good at reviewing music albums. About Ali, I heard she is a new singer but she does have a unique voice that can be soothing for many. I admire her for being strong despite things that were hurtful in her past.

I also heard that Wondergirl’s new collaboration “Like Money w/ Akon” is getting a lot of recognition over in the US. Radio stations are requesting that song to replay over and over. I listened to it, it was alrite but very typical. It sort of is surprising cause there were many K-artist that came here but the US market is so hard to attract listeners. They may have already made their first break with their debut a few years back but I look forward to the day they dominate, which I don’t know if I would actually want that but nonetheless, I wish them many luck.

I was on my laptop while my TV was tuned to the Disney channel since my little niece watches that channel all day and I noticed them playing a song that caught my attention. It could be unique or typical since the style and lyrics of music nowadays is slowing turning away from mellow love into more realistic lyrics and beats. Well, since the Disney’s channel aims at kids, I thought it might be kiddish to like this song but couldn’t help it when it came on, and Yuna came in to the visions. I guess I like all sort of music if the lyrics and notes caught my attention at first impression.

    Here is the song:
    Strangely Beautiful, by Shealeigh.

Hey Daniel, you are pretty good at reviewing music albums.

Nah, that can’t be :) I’m just sharing my impressions.

About Ali, I heard she is a new singer but she does have a unique voice that can be soothing for many. I admire her for being strong despite things that were hurtful in her past.

She is awesome… And her voice is wonderful and really unique. For me it was such a delight to discover her.

I also heard that Wondergirl’s new collaboration “Like Money w/ Akon” is getting a lot of recognition over in the US. Radio stations are requesting that song to replay over and over. I listened to it, it was alrite but very typical.

Yeah, I know about it. To me it sounds really generic. Just like a typical American pop, thousands of them. Maybe that’s actually a way to success, because it sounds like everything else and since it’s ok, it can get secure amount of time on radio, but I personally would prefer them doing something different, after all, that’s why I’m interested in Kpop. But maybe it’s not a good way to make it on US scene, I don’t know. JYP must know better, I guess :)

It sort of is surprising cause there were many K-artist that came here but the US market is so hard to attract listeners. They may have already made their first break with their debut a few years back but I look forward to the day they dominate, which I don’t know if I would actually want that but nonetheless, I wish them many luck.

Well… The US market is a hard place, but Korean artists do get some recognition at least from Koreans that live in US and then there is already a fanbase for Korean groups in US and worldwide.
Korean pop is actually slowly, but steadily getting to the international scene… For example, I actually saw 2NE1 on some Spanish musical channel, it was kind of surprising, but why not?
I think, the challenge they have to face, is that most listeners want to hear songs on the language they know, which means they have to have most (not just some) songs in English. That’s difficult itself, because they must have a good writer and they must understand the local audience, their circumstances.
And to dominate, they either have to bring the Kpop there, or to master the American pop and be outstanding in it and both things are really hard to achieve… And it’s actually kind of unpredictable too, there is always a lot of luck when it comes to the most successful pop stars.
I do appreciate their efforts and I think they are definitely not in vane, but there is a long road to go…

You guys surely know miss A.
They became famous mostly because of this:

    and this:

Their most recent hit song is this:

I really loved their full length album “A class”. There were so many good songs in addition to “Bad Girl Good Girl” and “Breathe”, that I listened to it entirely many times and still listen to many tracks. In fact, actually right now I’m listening to “Break it” from it :)

So naturally I became interested in the new mini-album.

The first thing that calls the attention is the packaging. It is the best of all Korean albums I have, it’s just gorgeous. The included book is really good, with great photos.

Now, going to the musical content… Of course, it includes “Touch” and a remixed version of it. Both are really good. The remaining 4 tracks are nice too. The musical content is weaker than it was in “A class” where almost every song was a nice discovery and had something about it. Here it is just a good pop, not very memorable, but very pleasant to actually listen.

In fact, I think overall this album is better than “Electric shock” presented above, except “Electric shock”, the song. Which isn’t a good news for me, because I like f(x) more than other groups.

But well, that’s how I feel about it. The next miss A full length album surely will be great if they will keep going like this.

I want to take back what I said here because I just heard “Oppa Gangnam style..” out loud on my local radio station. Ok…it’s a bit unusual but I must get used to it cause it’s a Korean song on a local American radio station. It’s very unbelievable…PSY is just unbelievable. On top of hanging out with Usher in a club, guesting on morning shows, MTV, SNL, and other events etc..this guy finally is the one that attracted US listeners. He gets a +3 GOE!

Someone posted this on tumblr. Had to share it for many reasons: lol!

    It’s everywhere!

TBH, this song isn’t quiet my style when I first heard it, but I guess it’s good enough…since so many people liked it. Well, as I’ve said before, I am very proud that PSY did it! Many success for him in the future and for Korean wave!

    Here is something funny:

“Oppa Gangnam style” is everywhere in the world from Russia to United States. Not in Spain yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised, hope it’ll eventually appear here.

This song with video is one of those masterpieces that appear out of nowhere and then you just can’t let them go. By the way, it’s also thanks to YouTube… After appearing there it quickly became viral and was reposted thousand times in blogs and other services.
I’m very happy that things like this happen and the whole thing is totally awesome, love it.

It’s amazing! I am more stunned by its viral effect all over the world, touching the USA and other parts of the world very quickly. It has been the #1 song on itunes for a while and last I heard, the song made it to #2 or #1 of the Billboards. It became #1 song in 38 countries worldwide. Just look at the following videos posted on youtube. Both gave me a good chuckle!

PSY recently collaborated with a New York fashion designer Jill Stuart and released this MV:

hahaha! Congrats to PSY and all of his team!

:D I think Bigbang‘s songs were well-made even though I’m not a big fan of Bigbang. Now GD has music activities with ‘Crayon’.
