Kim Yu-na, Russia and The ‘Glorious Destiny’

(서울=연합뉴스) 고동욱 기자 = 올해 세계선수권대회에서 13개월 만의 실전에 나서는 '피겨 여왕' 김연아(21·고려대)가 23일 결전지인 러시아 모스크바에 도착했다.

   실전 감각을 무디게 만드는 긴 공백을 안고 나서는 무대임에도 러시아로 떠나는 김연아의 표정은 밝았다.

   동계올림픽 직전 수준까지 올라왔다는 컨디션도 중요하지만, 러시아가 항상 좋은 기억을 남겨 준 '약속의 땅'이라는 점도 마음을 한결 가볍게 해줄 것으로 보인다.

   김연아는 2006년 시니어 무대 데뷔 이후 러시아에서만 두 차례나 금메달을 목에 걸었다.

   러시아와의 첫 인연은 2006년 상트페테르부르크에서 맺어졌다.

   당시 시니어 데뷔 후 처음으로 그랑프리 파이널에 출전한 김연아는 쇼트프로그램 65.06점과 프리스케이팅 119.14점을 받아 총점 184.20점으로 우승했다.

   허리 통증에 시달리면서도 진통제를 먹고 테이핑을 해 가며 투혼을 발휘한 끝에 달성한 첫 우승이었다.

   시니어에 데뷔한 해에 그랑프리 파이널에서 우승한 선수는 김연아가 역대 두 번째로, 주니어 무대의 '기대주'가 시니어 무대에도 연착륙했음을 알리는 금메달이었다.

   김연아는 이듬해에도 모스크바에서 열리는 그랑프리 5차 대회에 초청받아 러시아행 비행기를 탔다.

   쇼트프로그램에서 63.50점으로 1위에 오른 김연아는 이튿날 프리스케이팅에서 133.70점을 얻어 총점 197.20점으로 우승했다.

   당시 김연아의 프리스케이팅 점수는 역대 최고점을 갈아치운 신기록이었다. 이 점수는 '신기록 행진'을 벌였던 2009-2010시즌 전까지 김연아의 최고 기록으로 남았다.

   또 총점에서도 197점을 넘기면서 '꿈의 200점대'를 넘길 만한 후보군 중 하나로 입지를 다졌다.

   기술요소에 대한 채점 규정이 강화돼 시즌 내내 아무도 190점을 넘지 못한 상황에서 나온 점수라 더욱 의미가 깊었다.

   2010 밴쿠버 동계올림픽에서 금메달을 따낸 이후 김연아는 한번 더 러시아와 인연을 맺을 뻔 했다.

   국제빙상경기연맹(ISU)이 2010-2011시즌 그랑프리 시리즈 중 모스크바에서 열린 5차 대회에 김연아를 초청했기 때문이다.

   세계선수권대회에만 집중하겠다며 그랑프리 시리즈 출전을 포기하면서 러시아 무대와 3년 만의 재회가 불발되는가 했으나, 공교롭게도 세계선수권대회 장소가 변경되면서 인연의 끈이 이어지게 됐다.

   김연아가 올해 세계선수권대회에서는 또 어떤 즐거운 기억과 함께 모스크바를 떠날지 기대된다.

Moscow mayor charged with organizing World Figure Skating Championship

MOSCOW, April 4 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin has become chairman of the organizing committee of the World Figure Skating Championship due to be held in Moscow on April 23 – May 2.

The Moscow administration will organize the championship jointly with the Federal Ministry for Sport, Tourism and Youth Politics and the Russian Figure Skating Federation. The championship will be held at the "Megasport» Palace of Sport in Moscow.

A decree on the organization of the championship signed by the Moscow city mayor envisages the allocation of more than 207. 6 million roubles from a reserve fund of the city budget to finance the championship.

A decision to hold the World Figure Skating Championship in Moscow was made by ISU and the 2011 World Championship organizing committee as a result of a severe earthquake followed by the devastating tsunami in Japan which was iniatially to become the venue of the championship .

Around 200 sportsmen and the accompanying staff are to arrive in Moscow in late April. Besides, a total of 700 journalists will be accredited at the championship, and some 5,000 foreign tourists will arrive.

Sergei Siobyanin said earlier that Moscow would be able to get ready for the championship within barely a month's time. "I have no doubt that Moscow will cope with it. There is all the necessary infrastructure in the capital," Sobyanin said.

Yuna Kim’s coach Peter Oppegard arrives in Korea

Kim’s preparation for Worlds speeds up

‘Figure Queen’ Yuna Kim’s coach Peter Oppegard arrived in Korea on March 31, 4:30 AM through Inchon International Airport.
 
Kim will be competing at the World Figure Skating Championships (April 24 – May 1) in Moscow, Russia. 
Instead of returning to her training grounds in Los Angeles, Kim decided to continue her training at the Indoor Skating Rink at the Taereung Training Center. 
Taereung  is a training center for athletes on the Korean National team. 
Kim’s coach Peter Oppegard will stay in Korea to train her. 
 
“After Kim expressed that she wished to train at Taereung so that she could focus on being in top shape at Worlds, 
coach Peter Oppegard gladly agreed and came to Korea as soon as possible,” said Kim’s management, All That Sports.
 
Oppegard will return to Korea with Kim after the World Championships and stay to watch her ice show, 
‘KCC Switzen All That Skate Spring 2011’ which will be held at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul from May 5 – 8. 
He will return to L.A. after the show.
