[Reuters] Yuna promises no regrets as Koreans gear up for Sochi

Kim Yuna will not be around when the Winter Games come to Pyeongchang in 2018, but the South Korean figure skating queen has promised to give her all in the defense of her Olympic title in Sochi next year.

Kim blew away the competition in Vancouver three years ago to become the first South Korean to win an Olympic figure skating gold medal and is highly fancied to retain her title in the Russian Black Sea resort in February.

The 22-year-old joined speed skating gold medallist Lee Sang-hwa and other athletes, coaches and officials at the Taeneung National Training Center in northeastern Seoul on Friday to discuss South Korea's preparations for the Games.

"I won't be able to compete in Pyeongchang in 2018 but I will prepare hard for Sochi without getting injured and perform without any regrets," said Kim.

"I hope those who do not participate in 2014 but dream about being part of the Olympic Games do not give up and try hard."

Sports minister Yoo Jin-ryong said the country's new president had a keen interest in boosting Korea's sporting prowess on the international stage.

"President Park Geun-hye is immensely interested in what the government can do to better improve conditions (for athletes), said Yoo. "Through your performance in the Games, you will give Koreans hope and pride."

South Korea's slogan for the Games, "Team Korea, Fly 204", symbolizes their determination to spread the Olympic spirit among the IOC's 204 member nations.

After winning six golds and 14 medals to finish fifth in Vancouver, South Korea is targeting at least four golds in Sochi and 20 medals overall for a top-four finish in 2018.

The Korean Olympic Committee has extended the training period for Sochi-bound athletes to 240 days from 210 days for Vancouver to give South Korean athletes more time to prepare.

Speed skater Lee, who won a gold medal in the 500 meters in Vancouver, also read out a resolution from the team with paralympian sledge ice hockey captain Han Min-su.

"We will achieve the best results not only in Sochi but also in Pyeongchang so that we can continue the status of South Korea as a nation of strong athletic performance," she said.

Kim Yuna’s new exhibition is “Imagine”

‘Figure Queen’ Kim Yuna announced that her new exhibition program will be to Avril Lavigne’s ‘Imagine’. After this was revealed, public interest in the music has spiked.

“The music was chosen in hopes of spreading the message of peace around the world. We want to emphasize the meaning and message of the song more than skating techniques and performance elements. We hope that the audience, and also the people who cannot come, will enjoy the program,” said All That Sports, Kim’s management.

John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ was released in 1971 conveying the message of anti-war. Kim will use Canadian singer Avril Lavigne’s cover of the song which was recently released by Amnesty International (AI), a human rights group. The song is from AI’s ‘Make Some Noise’ compilation album, part of a program to raise funds to help improve human rights in Sudan.

“The music for Yuna’s new exhibition, ‘Imagine’ is a song that both Yuna and I like. Since Yuna was familiar with the song, we were able to go in depth with the choreography. The song is quite simple but it is difficult to interpret it because there is so much meaning is contained in the song. However, Yuna truly understood the meaning of the song, we work together really well and as a result we ended up with a perfect program. If you think of the lyrics while you listen to the song, you naturally think of the world we live in. The program captures Yuna’s expressiveness, delicacy and gentle beauty once again. I think the world will be touched by Yuna’s ‘Imagine’,” said David Wilson, who choreographed the program.

Kim’s ‘Imagine’ exhibition number will be revealed at the ‘Samsung Galaxy ★ Smart AirCon All That Skate 2013’ show which will be held at the Olympic Gymnastics Hall, Seoul from June 21-23.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and champion figure skater Yuna Kim appeals for the children of Syria

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Olympic Gold Medallist and world champion figure skater Yuna Kim today made a heartfelt appeal for support for the children of conflict-torn Syria.

In a 30-second video message Kim, a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2010, calls on viewers to, “Help UNICEF help the children of Syria.”

The crisis in Syria, now in its third year, has affected 3.1 million children inside Syria whilst the number of children who have fled to neighboring countries as refugees is nearing 730,000.

UNICEF is delivering food, water, medical supplies, education, child protection – including psychological and counselling services –  and vaccines to Syrians in need. More than 2,900 schools in Syria have been damaged by violence.

Despite generous contributions so far, without additional urgent funding, UNICEF and partners will face enormous challenges to assist children and families in the coming months.

Since Kim joined UNICEF she has been a champion for children’s rights.  Her activities include recording a television appeal after the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

She also recorded a public service announcement reminding the world to live up to its promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Kim has donated her prize money from the World Figure Skating Championships to children affected by the Japanese earthquake in 2011 and after her recent victory in the World Figure Skating Championship she donated her winnings to UNICEF for children with disabilities.
